NutriLens AI Recommendation Sources

NutriLens AI Recommendation Sources

NutriLens AI helps users track meals, calories, hydration, fasting, activity, and nutrition patterns with AI-assisted estimates. The app provides educational guidance and tracking tools only. It is not a substitute for medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment.

How Body Mass Index is calculated

Body Mass Index (BMI) is calculated from a person’s weight and height. The standard equation is BMI = kg/m2, where kg is body weight in kilograms and m2 is height in meters squared.

Learn more from the CDC BMI reference.

How BMR is calculated

Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) estimates the energy a body uses at rest. NutriLens AI may use established predictive equations that consider weight, height, age, and sex to estimate energy needs.

Nutrition targets are estimates and can vary by individual metabolism, health conditions, medications, and activity level.

How Adaptive Weekly Calorie Targets are calculated

Adaptive Weekly Calorie Targets refine a user’s calorie goal based on their own logged results over time, rather than relying on a static formula alone. This recommendation appears on the Progress screen only when enough reliable data exists.

A recommendation requires at least:

  • 10 logged nutrition days within the previous 14 days
  • Two weight records spanning at least 10 days

NutriLens AI compares the user’s actual weight trend against their stated goal of losing, maintaining, or gaining weight. If logging appears incomplete or inconsistent, no recommendation is generated. Any suggested change is capped at ±150 kcal/day, and carbohydrate targets are adjusted proportionally to keep macros aligned with the new calorie level.

The app never changes a calorie goal automatically. A recommendation is only a suggestion; the user must review and tap Apply for it to take effect. Once applied, the adaptive target persists across app restarts and future weigh-ins until the user changes it again.

How NutriLens AI’s Nutrition Grade is calculated

The Nutrition Grade summarizes the estimated quality of a food or meal using calories, macronutrient balance, fiber, sugar, sodium, fat, and ingredient quality signals when available. The result is translated into an easy-to-understand letter grade.

GradeScore range
A+90+
A80-89
B+70-79
B65-69
B-60-64
C+55-59
C50-54
C-40-49
D0-39

How Micronutrients and Advanced Reports are calculated

In addition to calories and macronutrients, NutriLens AI estimates micronutrient intake, including vitamins (such as A, C, D, E, and B12), fiber, sugar, sodium, and cholesterol, based on the foods a user logs. These values are drawn from underlying food database records and AI-assisted estimates, and are aggregated into weekly and monthly trend reports.

Micronutrient estimates are approximate and depend on the accuracy and completeness of logged foods. They are intended to help users spot general patterns over time and are not a clinical or diagnostic measurement of nutrient status.

Scientific basis

NutriLens AI uses nutrition concepts informed by public health and dietary guidance, including recommendations from reputable nutrition and health organizations.

How AI Coach gives answers

AI Coach responses are generated to provide general nutrition education, meal ideas, and habit guidance. Responses may be incomplete or incorrect and should be reviewed with common sense and professional guidance when health decisions are involved.

Always consult a qualified healthcare professional before making medical or significant diet changes, especially if you have a health condition, take medication, are pregnant, or follow a prescribed diet.

How friends leaderboards and challenge scores are calculated

NutriLens AI’s social features let users connect with friends, join or create challenges, and compare progress through a derived score. This score is calculated from in-app activity such as logging consistency, streaks, and challenge participation, and is used to rank users on friends leaderboards and, if a user opts in, the global public leaderboard.

Consecutive-day streaks are calculated from actual daily logging activity. Challenge rankings update live as participants log activity during the challenge period, and users may receive notifications when a challenge starts, when they are overtaken by another participant, or when a challenge ends.

Participation in friends, leaderboards, and challenges is optional. Users control their own visibility and privacy through in-app settings, including the ability to send or decline friend requests and to block other users. Badges earned for streaks or challenge wins are displayed on a user’s profile and are visible to friends according to the user’s privacy settings.
